Behailu Academy is a free, afterschool arts-based youth development program for 6th-8th-grade students where participants develop both artistic and social-emotional skills in a safe, supportive environment. During the program, students learn, practice and strengthen their competence in self-management, self-discipline, and interpersonal skills and use what they’ve learned in school, at home and in the world at large. This Fall, as part of our new program model- we began our partnership with Invest Collegiate: TRANSFORM offering two intensive sessions for students in grades 6-8.
Using art as a foundation, we provide active and reflective experiences where students learn to collaborate successfully with others, build and express a healthy sense of self, and work toward goals with passion.
In order to achieve our mission we:
Create a safe space in which students take productive risks and rise to challenges.
Provide opportunities for students to encounter new situations and interact with adults who serve as role models
Allow students to test, discover, design, puzzle, build, experiment, create, play and imagine
Encourage choice in activities, partnerships, goals, and ways of presenting themselves and their work
Give time for providing and receiving feedback
Foster expression in ways that students find meaning through various forms of artistic expression
